Description
A 1976 Gibson SG Standard, serial #00148823, in white finish. Stage played by Jack White during the early days of The White Stripes as well as in the Detroit rock band The Go. The guitar was used during the recording sessions of The Go’s debut album Whatcha Doin’, as well as in demos. It can be easily identified in photographs from the era due to the broken-off bass side tip of the headstock, giving the front a distinctive rounded-over appearance.
It can be seen in rare White Stripes concert footage of their opening slot performance supporting The Compulsive Gambles at Magic Stick on April 17th, 1999, and in the book The Go in Black and White published by Third Man Records (2019) on page 10 (Motor Lounge) on March 12th, 1999, and pages 11-21 (Lush, March 9, 1999). It is also pictured on page 100 of the winter 2021 issue of Third Man Records’ Maggot Brain magazine.
The Gibson SG Standard features a 24.75" scale length three-piece mahogany neck, a bound 22-fret rosewood fretboard with mother of pearl block inlays, a mahogany body finished in a heavily worn white finish. Chrome hardware including humbucker pickup covers, a Gibson-branded vibrato, bridge, and switch tip surround. The two pickups are controlled by a three-way toggle switch and volume and tone controls for each.
The guitar is extremely aged from cigarette smoke and play, with a yellowed and heavily checked finish which has numerous areas of missing finish. The back of the neck has been worn through to bare wood as has the right arm area of the lower bass side bout. Headstock has been broken and repaired at least twice and is missing its bass side tip. The control area of the body has been broken and repaired numerous times.
Accompanied by a COA handwritten and signed by Jack White, and an additional COA handwritten and signed by White Stripes official archivist, Ben Blackwell.
Comes in an old Gibson-branded case with blue interior, possibly original to the guitar. Also includes a copy of The Go in Black and White, a copy of the winter 2021 issue of Maggot Brain, and a sealed Third Man Records Vault Package #41 which contains The Go's 20th anniversary edition debut album and a bonus LP and 7-inch of demos and outtakes.
