Leon Arkus was the director of the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, in the 1970s. Ern Malley turned out to be one of the great literary hoaxes: he was made up by two Australian poets, James McAuley and Harold Stewart, who were intent on proving that modern poetry was a sham.
