DESCRIPTION: An antique Japanese Meiji miniature kiri dansu with hand wrought iron fittings.  This chest retains its original sao-toshi (side carrying handles for a pole), has six various drawers with warabité form drawer pulls, a pair of handsome iron clad sliding cabinet doors and a kobeyaki-do (small safe) on the lower right.  This tansu is striking for the contrast of the light wood with its attractively designed iron fittings.  Kiri or paulownia wood was very desirable for storage because of its unique ability to flex (expansion-contraction ratio) under atmospheric change and protect the contents from the effects of moisture. Marked on underside with seal script branding.
