Description
La Visita by Joaquin Sorolla Y Bastida (1863 - 1923) is an oil on canvas depicting a small boat tied to the shore with a larger vessel seemingly anchored in the background waiting for the party to return. Signed lower left J. Sorolla B. Painting is not framed. From edge of unframed canvas as shown in photos measures approximately 14 inches height by 19 inches width. Comes in black portfolio case / protector as shown in photos that measures a little over 17 inches width by 22 inches height.Provenance: Obtained from private collector in New York.Influenced by Luminism mainly but also Impressionism, Bastida was considered a a Plen Air artist that strayed away from abstracts and focused on items of recognition. Initially, Bastida's work was mostly of social settings, portraits, and religious themes. Later in his career, he was focused on the spectrums and blindness of light and color often doing coastal paintings many of Valencien beaches. Bastida moved from Spain to the United States and resided in New York City. At the end of his career, Joaquin Sorolla Y Bastida did a seven year project for the Hispanic Society of America in New York City consisting of painted panels of scenes of Spain. It is said that the intense labor to complete the project exhausted him and a year after completion, he had a stroke in 1920 and then passed away in New York three years later. Joaquin Sorolla Y Bastida artwork is world renown and in many museums including Museo Sorolla which used to be his house in Spain. Bastida's PESCADORES VALENCIANOS (VALENCIAN FISHERMEN)' sold at auction for over $5.9 million in 2012. 1% of hammer price for all items sold at Masters of Art Volume II Art Series Auction will be donated to the Humane Society.
