Description
1753 J. Homann Map of Russia -- Imperii Russici et Tartariae Universae tam Majoris et Asiaticae, quam Minoris et Europaeae Tabula. 1753 Nurnberg. 19.2 x 22.4 in. A fantastic map of Russia from the Baltics to Kamchatka, plus Korea and Japan and also much of China. There is a considerable amount of detail in Siberia. However, the Ob River delta is still not well explored and Novaya Zemlya’s coast is not well defined, and it isn’t clear yet if it is an island or not (it is). The customary high level of topographical and settlement details are offered throughout the map. There are two decorative cartouches: The cartouche at top is titled "Annae Magna Vietrici Russorum Imperatrici..." It features a tribute to Anna I (Anna Ivanovna), the Empress of Russia; and the main cartouche in the lower left features hunters.
