Item Details
Description
18th century, 291 x 34 cm, North Africa, Algeria
This silk embroidery from Algeria (Tanchifa) was produced on a sheer muslin foundation made of linen. A directional design of lively branches, arabesques, blossoms and botehs is repeated five times in the field. The intensive brilliance of the glossy silk yarn dyed steel blue, red, purple and in pastel shades is a typical feature of these elaborate embroideries. They were made in long narrow panels, then joined together and used as curtains for partitioning.
Signs of age and wear, a number of small holes, somewhat reduced finish at one end.
