Item Details
Description
  • Title: Dogon statue - Mali - African Art Tribal Art
  • Date/Period: Mid-XX°
  • Origin: Mali
  • Dimension: 21,26 Inch
  • Materials: wood
  • Weight: 4,3 Pounds
  • Item type: Statues, ancestors, reliquaries
  • Provenance: The collection comes from the tribal art collection of Guy Mercier, a consultant for the Solvay group, who undertook it at the beginning of the 20th century. Although he travelled extensively in West and Central Africa as part of his work, collecting works in situ, the majority of his collection came from the "cabinets of curiosity" that abounded in European capitals during the 1920s. It also comes from prestigious galleries (Paris, Brussels, London, New York, etc.). These statues, sometimes embodying the nyama of the deceased, are placed on ancestral altars and take part in various rituals, including those of the sowing and harvesting seasons. In parallel with Islam, Dogon religious rites are organized around four main cults: the Lébé, relating to fertility, under the spiritual authority of the Hogon, the Wagem, ancestor worship under the authority of the patriarch, the Binou invoking the spirit world and led by the Binou priest, and the mask society concerning funerals.
According to Dogon cosmogony, the first Dogon primordial ancestors, called Nommo , were the water gods. They were created in heaven by the creator god Amma and descended from heaven to earth in an ark.
The Nommo founded the eight Dogon lineages and instilled weaving, blacksmithing and agriculture in their human descendants.
