Provenance: The collection comes from the tribal art collection of Guy Mercier, a consultant for the Solvay group, who undertook it at the beginning of the 20th century. Although he travelled extensively in West and Central Africa as part of his work, collecting works in situ, the majority of his collection came from the "cabinets of curiosity" that abounded in European capitals during the 1920s. It also comes from prestigious galleries (Paris, Brussels, London, New York, etc.). Peacefully settled in eastern Angola until the 16th century, the Chokwe were later subjugated by the Lunda empire. Chokwe pwo African masks, among the many akishi (sing: mukishi, indicating power) masks of Chokwe African art, embody an ideal of beauty, Mwana Pwo, or the Pwo woman, and appear today during festive ceremonies. Together with their male counterparts, chihongo, recognizable by their large, tray-shaped headdress, pwo are believed to bring fertility and prosperity to the community. The characteristic patterns on the forehead, and sometimes on the cheekbones, are part of the Chokwe aesthetic canons, but also served as public markers of ethnic identity. The recurring cruciform frontal motif is also said to have cosmogonic significance (source: Chokwe, B. Wastiau).
