Description

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sulawesi Island, Toraja people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A superb ceremonial horn crest for a headdress with rattan cords attached on the verso. The piece consists of 2 flat panels carved from water buffalo horn, connected at the center with iron rivets, the tips pierced for additional ornamentation. This would have been worn during ceremonies or funerals. Water buffaloes are central to the culture of the Toraja peoples; not only do they serve as currency and symbols of status and wealth, but they are also an important sacrificial animal during funerals. Torajan people traditionally perform buffalo sacrifices to ensure the deceased's smooth transition into the afterlife and to honor their social standing within the community. The number of buffaloes sacrificed often reflects the social status and wealth of the deceased and their family. Size: 20.5" L x 2.75" W x 10.5" H (52.1 cm x 7 cm x 26.7 cm); 14" H (35.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Before the 20th century, the Torajan people lacked a distinct ethnic identity, primarily identifying with their individual villages in the highland regions of Sulawesi. The term "Toraja," originating from coastal languages, initially served as an outsider expression for highlanders, with Dutch missionaries later contributing to the development of Toraja ethnic consciousness in the Sa'dan Toraja region. The word "Toraja" comes from the Bugis Buginese language term "to riaja," meaning "people of the uplands." Torajans are renowned for their elaborate funeral rites, burial sites carved into rocky cliffs, tongkonans, and colorful wood carvings.
