An antique Russian Orthodox icon of Mother Of God Kazanskaya. The hand painted icon with egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood panel. The icon is overlaid with a silver gilt oklad or riza chased and engraved with finely detailed patterns. Circa the late 19th century. Hallmarked with a Cyrillic assay mark A.Sh. under the date 1896, an 84 Russian silver standard, crossed anchors for St. Petersburg, and the makers mark: A.U., possibly for Uzikov Alexander Semenovich, owner of a silverware workshop, 1880-1908. The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is a revered miraculous icon of the Mother of God, which appeared in Kazan in 1579. One of the most revered icons of the Russian Orthodox Church.
