AN IRON, SILVER AND GILT KORO (INCENSE BURNER) IN THE FORM OF A 16-PLATE SUJIBACHI KABUTO (RIDGED HELMET)
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
The 16-plate sujibachi kabuto in russet iron, the top with a five-stage tehen kanamono (decorative apex ring), a four-lame iron komanju jikoro (rounded neck guard), the fukigaeshi (turnbacks) applied with a gilt coiled ho-o (phoenix) medallion, fitted with a kuwagata-dai relief, supporting a gilt brass kuwagata (horns) engraved with scrolling foilage and a gilt maedate (forecrest) in the form of a dragon matching the gilt writhing dragon adorning the downturned mabisashi (peak), the helmet bowl removable revealing a silver-lined interior, the inside of the helmet engraved with three butterflies and pierced with six butterfly-shaped apertures; unsigned. 14.5cm x 17cm (5¾in x 6 5/8in). The left iron turnback slightly 'sprained' and bent back a bit more than the other iron turnback on the other side but given the material, this aforementioned flaw is probably original to the manufacture. Very good condition and presentable order.
