A SATSUMA KORO (INCENSE BURNER) IN THE FORM OF A HO-O (PHOENIX)
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt, the prow modelled as the head of a ho-o bird with its wings outstretched, the body painted with chidori (plovers or dotterels) skimming over the waves, the shibuichi cover pierced with chrysanthemum blooms interwoven among karakusa ('Chinese grasses'). 11cm x 24.5cm (4 3/8in x 9 5/8in).
