Description
An American Girlhood Silk on Linen Alphabet Needlework Sampler, Dated 1832. Wrought by Mary Letitia Montgomery. There are nine rows of uppercase, lowercase and script alphabets above an inscription panel to the lower section inscribed:
"Mary Letitia Montgomery 7th year of her age April 13, 1832 / Remember now thy creator in the days of thy youth"
All within a floral border. In a 19th century flame mahogany veneered and molded frame.
There is a typed note to the reverse inscribed "The above was told me by Great-aunt Edith Holmes Gregory, Summerville, South Carolina, November 1946. Mary Dickson Hall".
Dimensions: Sight 16 1/2 x 16 3/4in; Frame 22 1/2 x 23 1/4in.
Provenance: Property from the Collection of C. Thomas Attix Jr., East Windsor, New Jersey.
Condition
Framed and glazed. Not examined out of the frame. Fading throughout. Discolorations and toning. Heavy fading to inscription panel in lower section. The frame with general marks, nicks and movement to veneers.
