Item Details

Description

Nice earlier smaller 1833 type with only six scales and hand wrought metal backings. They were utilitarian and meant to absorb sword blows for mounted cavalry, unlike the civil war era seven scale hollow style. Each scale is flat sheet brass overlapped and pinned with backing plate. No maker stamps observed. They measure 5-7/8" long x 3-1/4" wide x 1" high at the cup.
