Early Continental silver tray with a central repousse design depicting a tribal village scene (possibly an African view of the Wolof culture of Senegal). 18th to mid 19th century.

Possible hallmarks to reverse near the edge (see photo). Silver metal content unknown (untested). May be a lower grade of silver, or a nickel-silver alloy.

The borders decorated with dimensional designs of local fruits on branches with leaves and the edges crimped. The fine repousse central panel depicts a tribal group, some with spears, clubs and shields, wearing native clothing and with palm trees and a thatched hut in the background. The man in the center appears to be a Chieftain with a feathered headdress. Very detailed hammering and engraving make the scene come to life. A rare depiction in metal of a tribal culture discovered in the 17th - 18th century explorations.
