Ancient Central Asia, southern Azerbaijan and northern Iran, Ardabil region, Middle Bronze Age to Iron Age, ca. 2200 to 900 BCE. A blackware pitcher with a squat, spherical body with a ribbed texture and highly burnished surface. The handle is shaped with a thumb rest slightly higher than the rim - similar example are thought to have been drinking cups. Burnishing is typically achieved by rubbing the clay surface with a stone or piece of wood before firing. The pressure compresses and smooths, resulting in the lustrous surface we see here.
