Description
Watercolor, heightened with white, over pencil, on light gray-blue paper. The watercolor is partially attached to a ruled board mount with one paper hinge (originally two, the other presently separated). Unframed.
Bears type-written label and ink-stamped provenance on the reverse of the mount (see photos).
PAINTING (sheet size): 4 7/8" x 6 15/16" (12.3 cm x 17.6 cm)
MOUNT : 8 1/16" x 10 1/8" (20.5 cm x 25.7 cm)
PROVENANCE : From the collection of Theodore Allen Heinrich who was a collector of J.M.W. Turner watercolors, Curator of Art Collections and Senior Fellow for Art History at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California and Curator of Paintings and Curator-in-charge of drawings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Reverse of the mount bears a type written label which reads:
"A Country Lane, c. 1840 Watercolor over pencil, 4-3/4" x 6-7/8" A late field note in color, showing Turners method of making on-the-spot sketches for future development."
Reverse of the mount bears the ink-stamped identification mark of Dr. Theodore Allen Heinrich which reads:
"Dr. Theodore Allen Heinrich Curator At The Henry E. Huntington Art Gallery, San Marino, California"
Above that stamp is another ink-stamp for the 1951 Exhibition of Turner's works at the Huntington Art Gallery, partially stamped off the top of the board, which reads:
".... Exhibition At The Henry E. Huntington Art Gallery San Marino, California, December 1951 to June 1952"
Theodore Allen Heinrich was Curator of Art Collections and Senior Fellow for Art History at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, for 1951-52. He lent works by Turner from his own collection to the 1951 Huntington Art Gallery for the Turner Exhibition. From 1953 to 1955, he was Associate Curator of Paintings and Curator-in-charge of drawings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. There, he was involved in various projects to rebuild areas of the galleries and produce exhibitions, as well as publishing several museum books. From 1955 to 1962, he was Director of the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. Heinrich was a collector of works by J.M.W. Turner.
