NOTES / REFERENCES : Frederick George Griffing III (1951 - 2010) is a fourth generation Californian artist. Painting impressionistic seascapes, riverscapes, landscapes, and portraits, using oil on canvas over wood, Griffing pursues the plain-air tradition of his great uncle Walter Ufer, the most successful and famous of the Taos Society artists.

In Fred's seascapes the waters are turbulent and seething, sailboats appear tiny and buffeted. Titles like "Ship too close to rocks" are as much a description of Fred's life. In his singular pursuit of painting, Fred has at times worked and lived from his mobile studio, an old pick-up truck. Fred has been represented by the Cassandra Kirsten Gallery in Sausalito as a classic abstract figurative painter, and by Graves' Country Gallery as an outsider lawless wild man (he often lives out of a truck, when he has one, and is often not in the frame of mind for polite society.) His canvases are stretched over salvaged wood, sometimes old nails protrude, and he often stacks his paintings in his truck uncovered, surfaces against each other. Consequently, the painted surfaces are often scratched and some works even have tears. These marks are considered natural "scars" by his collectors; they are part of the work and a physical testament to Fred's process, the journey of these paintings, and his rough life. Griffing has been painting prolifically for decades. There are thousands of his works with collectors, many undocumented. Many sold at flea markets, back and forth. He is a local legend collected avidly by other painters who recognize the hand of an accomplished master.
