**Originally Listed At $300**
Southwest Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A fantastical festival or temple mask in the form of a dramatic Barong spirit, with massive grinning teeth and upturned nose. The projecting ear flaps are carved separately then attached with iron nails, the concave interior is painted red, and additional coppery metallic paints highlight the fearsome visage. The Barong is a protector and the keeper of White Magic, whose eternal enemy is the demon queen, Rangda. These two entities embody the universal balance between the Good and the Bad in Balinese mythology, and most temples will contain masks of both to pray before.
