Description
The 3rd Ohio Regiment crossing the Saltriver at West-Point, Kentucky, on the 11th of December 1861. December 1861. Watercolor on Paper. Titled to lower margin. Early mat and frame.
A charming, detailed watercolor of the 3rd Ohio Infantry crossing the Salt River, a tributary of the Ohio River, in late 1861. Several small groups of soldiers are gathered along the shore line. Some have started small camp fires, and others converse with one another. One soldier bears a flag waving in the wind. In the background, a company of soldiers is being drilled by an officer. Some civilians are milling among the soldiers, and two steam paddlewheelers ply the river.
A beautiful, wartime folk art depiction of an Ohio regiment that deserves to be prominently displayed.
The scene here shows the 3rd Ohio Infantry after wintering in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. The regiment would eventually move to the Western Theater, where they would spend the remainder of the War. Notably, they were involved in the pursuit of Morgan's Raiders, and later an expedition against Confederate forces under the command of Nathan Bedford Forrest.
