Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Cambodia or Thailand, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 11th to 12th century CE. A fierce, hand-carved grey sandstone head of a guardian lion - a figure whose form resembles a mythological creature more than a real animal. His fierce visage features a snarling, open mouth exposing sharp fangs, a rounded snout, bulging eyes beneath sweeping brows, and a mane of protruding nodules. Its ferociously expressive face as if emitting a mighty roar protected the stupa and its holy relics and embodies the ?roar of the Buddha,? the teachings heard across the world. The colorful inlaid porcelain that adorns the animal's crown and ears was likely added during the 19th century when the use of inlaid shards of Chinese pottery in stucco and architecture became popularized throughout Thailand. Size: 11" L x 12.1" W x 12.8" H (27.9 cm x 30.7 cm x 32.5 cm); 20.5" H (52.1 cm) on included custom stand.

In fact, during the construction of Wat Arun, King Rama III (also Nangklao, 1788-1851) famously invited local people to donate their broken ceramics to the project in a fine example of early recycling.

Guardian lions flanked the main approaches to the sanctuary of most Khmer temples and were also placed along the stairways and on terraces. The lion, representing royalty, strength, and courage, was the personal symbol of the Khmer kings, who were believed to be gods as well. Therefore, the lion as guardian of the sacred precinct suggested the ability to ward off evil through both divine and royal protection.
