Oil on canvas. Signed. Dimensions: 16" x 20"; framed: 22" x 26". "Noturnal painting" was the term first coined by James Abbot McNeill Whistler to works at Dusk that portray pensive and still moods. George Whitaker, one of the founders of the Providence Art Club, a careful observer of developments in American painting embraced this concept when painting this port scene on Narragnasett Bay in the veil of light giving a dreamy pensive mood. Whitaker established himself as a prominent artist in Providence earning the accolade of “Dean of RI Artists". He exhibited throughout New England and is often identified as a landscape artist in the Barbizon style.
