Description
A rarely-encountered example dating to the Safavid Dynasty. The bowl of deep hemispherical form, wrought of intricately-patterned Persian wootz, set with a pair of plumeholders, an adjustable nasal and elegant top spike, all finely inlaid in gold. Superbly chiseled with eight cartouches containing inscriptions, warriors, kings, hunting beasts and flowers, with a broad band of flowering vines inlaid in gold around the rim, supporting fine inlaid gold panels throughout. To the right of one plume tube appears the chiseled date 924 (1527/28 c.e.) commemorating the year in which one of the greatest Safavid shahs, Shah Tahmasp I, at the age of 13, shot his regent, Div Sultan Rumlu with an arrow. A few months later, Shah Tahmasp defeated the Uzbeks at Jam. Retains its original camail of fine iron rings with geometrical patterns worked in brass rings bordered in long, tapering termini. Late 17th century. Minor stable cracks, mail age-darkened, lightly cleaned. Height including camail 71cm. Condition III
