Description
M.SZTERN, WARSAW, 1880, JUDAICA.Made of .875 standard (Russian 84 zolotniki) silver, the backplate embossed with scrolls and foliage, fronted by a row of eight candle sockets (two missing). Marked by silversmith – M. Sztern from Warsaw, active in 19th c., second half.Dimensions: height – 167, width – 189 mm, depth – 45 mm. Weight: 276 g.Stamps: Maker’s mark: M.SZTERN in Cyrillic on both front and back parts. Assayer’s stamp O.C. / 1880 – probably Osip Sosnkowski, active in Warsaw 1869-1896. Only on front.Guarantee mark for 84 zolotniki silver standard with illegible townhall mark (Warsaw?). Only on front.Later (1920-1963 period), double Polish stamp used after 1921. Only on the front part.Notice: Hannukah lamps by Sztern sold in Sotheby’s:-Important Judaica, March 18th 2004, lot 182-Important Judaica, December 19th, 2012, lot 29.Both examples with virtually same floral decoration as offered example.Provenance: private collection in Vienna.
Condition
two candle sockets missing. Probably originally with crown on top of the back part – missing. Minor marks and scratches, light, natural patina.
