Description
Egypt; ca. 1000 B.C.
An extremely rare and fine mummified head of a female,with delicate features and retaining virtually all skin surfaces,dentition and hair. Linen wrappings still partly in place (mostly over hair). Superb preservation. Likely New Kingdom or 3rd Intermediate Period work of the highest quality. Provenance dating back to 1877 (see below). By far the finest example to become available in many years. Displayed in antique glass dome.
Provenance
Given by the Egyptian Government in 1877 to Dr. Christian Fenger (see biography). Remaining in the Fenger family until 2013. Copy of notarized affidavit attesting to provenance, signed by Dr. Fenger's grandson, is available.
Christian Fenger (1840-1902) was a Danish-born surgeon, pathologist, and instructor who became one of the most highly regarded surgeons in the United States. For his distinguished accomplishments he was knighted by the King of Denmark in 1901. From 1875 to 1877, Fenger worked in Egypt, treating eye diseases. When he left, he was offered this mummy head, by an Egyptian official, in gratitude for his services.
