Description
French, early 19th century. A pair of wooden and canvas decorative screens, each with two panels comprising sea green-painted wooden frames trimmed in burlap ribbon, both front and back sides with nailed oil on canvas paintings, one side of one featuring bucolic landscape scenes comprising cliffs, pine and deciduous trees over bodies of water, the other screen featuring similar landscape scenes with trees, mountains, a cathedral and a two-story house with gabled roof, each scene within a painted tromp l'oeil frame with molded and beaded cornice supported by conforming sea green columns with fluted capitals painted rust and beige, the lower panels decorated with painted swags of blue fabric with gold fringe, the verso of each screen painted with floral bouquets comprising white, pink, and ivory flowers with deep green leaves within glass urn form vases with gilt gadrooned footed bases, the lower panels punctuated by the wooden frames decorated with tromp l'oeil marble panels against a teal marble ground. Each screen approximate height 53", width 44.25", depth 1". Each panel in screen measures 22". Provenance: Property from the Private Collection of Helen Ballard, Atlanta, Georgia.
