A Monumental Mahogany Kentucky Banjo Clock
Samuel Ayres, Danville, KY
c. 1820-1830
Samuel Ayres descended from a long line of Kentucky Silversmiths, and was originally trained as such. A letter from the Ayres’s paternal great grandson (named Samuel Ayres III) accompanies this lot and states that, according to family tradition, Ayres made this clock as a gift for his bride when he was an apprentice clockmaker.
H. 74 inches; W. 19 1/4 inches; D. 10 inches
Dial is 12 inches in diameter
A portrait miniature and daguerreotype depicting Samuel Ayres accompanies this lot.
Provenance: Descended directly in the Ayres family to Samuel Ayres III, 1983;
