Description
Japanese Mixed-Metal Incense Burner, Meiji period (1868-1912), signed "Nogawa" on the base, the mixed metal work and bronze body with cranes in silver, copper and Shakudo, the ornately carved and chased cover decorated with flowers and leaves, presented on a custom carved rosewood stand, h. 8", dia. 12".
Condition
In generally good condition. Base with a nick or two to edges. Patinated bronze body with a very scattered tiny scratch here and there, and a narrow area of scratches around the rim where rubbed by the cover. Patination with surface oxidation, most notably underneath. The herons nicely detailed--one with a scratch across one leg. Silvered metal insert generally worn consistent with use. Reticulated cover with crisp detail. One applied blossom needs reseating (was put back into place at some point a bit askew) and one small floral element at the lower edge is a compatible replacement.
