Description
A rare early 18th century sterling silver snuff mull by Hugh Ross of Tain. The lid is in the form of a shell and the slightly bulbous body tapers to a flat base. The interior is gilded and markedinside on the base. The bottom bears the crest of the 17th Earl of Sutherland and an inscription that reads "A gift of the Earl of Sutherland to Carrell 1747". This seems to refer to an area not far from the seat of the earl at Dunrobin Castle. L.: 6.2 cm (4 1/2 in.)
