Description
East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A remarkable stone relief fragment depicting Fudo Myoo, the Japanese form of Chinese Acala - a Buddhist wrathful deity and Dharmapala. A fierce protector of Buddhist law and one of the Five Kings of Brightness, Fudo Myoo manifests in an intimidating manner, presenting a strong body draped in a sash and wielding a sword in his left hand and a lasso in his right, all before fiery flames which he uses to purify evil. Size: 4.9" L x 7" W x 12.75" H (12.4 cm x 17.8 cm x 32.4 cm)

Condition
Fragment of a larger relief as shown. Chipping to base, peripheries, and arms of Fudo, as well as nicks and abrasions to surface as shown. Otherwise, good presentation with nice remaining detail and light earthen deposits in recessed areas.
