NOTE: THE TWO LOCKS OF ANNA’S LIGHT BLOND HAIR, TIED WITH CLOTH RIBBONS. The Needlework sampler is Inscribed: “Anna Mary Heriges Daughter of John Joseph and Elizabeth Menges Age 7 years”. Anna was born in 1819. Her family had a tobacco shop and owned several buildings on Lombard Street in Philadelphia.
Included with this sampler is a folder with genealogical information and a fascinating story of how her father slowly lost his mind and was eventually confined for years to a locked room upstairs in his house, suffering the effects of deteriorating health and care. At that point, her mother and brother were in charge of the business and the father care. The authorities were eventually called in by a neighbor, which sparked arrests and a neighborhood riot.
Silk on linen; 18 x 18.75 inches framed, 15.75 x 16.5 sight.
Condition: Professionally framed. Some small holes along the center fold lines. This sampler is accompanied by genealogical information for the Heriges family.
