Description
Pereira, Irene Rice (1902-1971)
On Substance in Relation to Intellective Cognition, [and] Crystal of the Rose, Two Typed Manuscripts, 1958-1959.
Two manuscripts on letter-sized typing paper and held in report covers with brass fasteners, both with handwritten corrections in the author's hand, with a typed letter signed inserted regarding the submission dated July 30, 1958 and addressed to Lee; some tears, edge chips; each 8 1/2 x 11 in.
On Substance, seemingly never published, is a prose work, a grand philosophical manifesto. Crystal is a collection of poems that was published by the Nordness Gallery in a limited edition of 300 copies in 1959. Perhaps better known as a visual artist, Pereira joined the Art Students League in New York City in 1927. She was influenced by the aesthetics of Cubism and other avant-garde approaches from Europe that emphasized geometric abstraction. Her work was exhibited in a showcase at the Whitney, making her one of the first women to have a retrospective at a major museum in New York.
"Underlying all experience is the phenomenon of substance. Substance gives meaning to experience. The characteristics of substance are individual and particular; but the qualities and properties of substance are universal. The universal attributes make knowledge and communication possible."
