Original blind glossed brown endpapers with a brown pebble-grained fabric blocked in gilt. William Bissell is the provenance (Lakeville, early inscription). initial US printing. Excellent condition, slight wear. Written in English. The British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace's book The Malay Archipelago details his eight-year scientific exploration of the southern Malay Archipelago, which included Malaysia, Singapore, the Indonesian islands (then known as the Dutch East Indies), and the island of New Guinea. The book goes into great detail into the physical and human geography of each island he visited, as well as its volcanoes and the variety of plants and animals he discovered and gathered. Simultaneously, he talks about his encounters, the challenges of traveling, and the assistance he got from the various peoples he encountered. According to the introduction, he traveled more than 14,000 kilometers and gathered 125,660 specimens of natural history, the most of which were insects but also included thousands of mollusks, birds, mammals, and reptiles. Using engravings by renowned artists such as Thomas Baines, Walter Hood Fitch, John Gerrard Keulemans, Joseph Wolf, E. W. Robinson, and T. W. Wood, and based on Wallace's observations and collection.
