NOTES / REFERENCES: Herbert George Ponting (1870-1935) is regarded as one of the leading travel photographers of the early 20th century. He spent three years traveling in Japan, and was a correspondent for Harpers Weekly with the First Japanese Army in Manchuria during the Russo-Japanese war.
