Description
A large German ivory-mounted silver tankard with putti, Berlin, W. Schwechten, circa 1900Silver. On a hollow oval base with a flaring rim. Decorated with two appliquéd cherubim. The base and distinctly domed, hinged lid embellished with chased tendrils. The cylindrical panels in an ivory casing with a scene of putti playing beneath arches in high relief. A foliage frieze around the columns. The walls wrought in detail. An ivory finial of a putto as a blacksmith on the hinged lid. Split thumb rest. Rocailles handle with a fully sculptured herm. Hallmarked with the crescent moon, crown, fineness "800" and master's mark. The upper figure with tiny retouches. Dimensions 40 x 25 x 15 cm, total weight 2.6 kg.
