Description
Henry St. Clair (French,1899-1990) oil on board impressionistic painting depicting boats in the Venice Harbor with St. Mark's tower in the background. Signed with initials HSC lower right corner. Housed under glass in a gilt simulated bamboo frame with woodgrain veneer mat. Sight: 7" H x 9 1/2" W. Framed: 10 1/2" H x 13" W. Biography: Post Impressionist painter Henry St. Clair was born in Normandy and later lived near the port of Honfleur. He worked as an art restorer for the National Museum of France, including the Louvre, in addition to painting his own scenes. St. Clair was inspired by the works of Raoul Dufy (with whom he worked in a studio for awhile) and he was also a student of Eugene Boudin. He is known for his paintings of beaches and seasides in Deuville, Honfleur and Trouville, painted mainly between 1920 and 1970 (aside from a disruption during World War II).
