Western & Asian Fine & Decorative Art Sale
Our major offering in the Western section of the Jan. 24 sale is a Connecticut snow scene by the noted American artist Ernest Lawson (1873-1939). Other noteworthy American paintings included in the sale are landscapes by George Ames Aldrich (1872-1941), George Thompson Pritchard (1878-1962), an Italian genre subject by George Thompson Hobbs (1846-1929), a literary subject by Vincent DuMond (American, 1865-1951), and an impressionist picture by the Indiana painter Helen M. Goodwin (1865-1955).
Chief among a selection of European bronzes are two mythological pieces by Claude Michel Clodion (1738-1814); sporting subjects by Pierre Jules Mene (1810-1879) and Comte Henri-Geoffroy de Ruille (1842-1922); and a figural piece by the Canadian sculptor Alice Winant (1928-1989).
Other items of interest are a rare pipe tomahawk axe (c. 1800) that descended directly through the owner’s family in Delaware County, PA; archival materials consisting of several embroideries, photographs and newspaper clippings relating to the life and activities of the noted restorer of historic flags Katherine Margaret Fowler Richey (1888-1949); and a 44-Star American flag of the type in use between 1891 and 1896, made for the 8th Regiment, United States Infantry.
Asian lots include paintings, bronzes, Peking glass, ceramics, lacquer, cloisonné, and jades from China, and Japan. Among the items featured are a Chinese Ming Dynasty Bronze Bodhisattva, an Imperial Qianlong Porcelain Dragon Cup, a Chinese Carved Tourmaline Pendant and Asian-themed woodblock prints by French artist Paul Jacoulet (1896-1960).
