International Posters - Auction #20
Our 20th San Francisco poster sale will be held on November 5. The auction features 387 poster lots of the themes Travel & Sports, Advertising, World’s Fair, Art & Entertainment, Film and Work Incentive.
The ADVERTISING section includes posters related to food & beverages, tobacco, clothing, consumer goods and transportation. ART & EVENTS includes early literary posters, small size art prints and Maitres de l'Affiche (Cheret, Steinlen, Mucha), modern graphic design from around the globe (incl. several works by Josef Muller-Brockmann) and entertainment posters (circus, theater, music). Following is a selection of 14 MATHER WORK INCENTIVE posters from 1927 - 1929. A collection of 35 INTERNATIONAL & WORLD'S FAIR posters includes works from all major fairs between 1900 and 1969.
Some of the auction's highlights can be found among the 100
MOVIE POSTERS and FILM PROGRAMS. There are 5 lots related to the original 1933
King Kong movie, incl. a rare French double-panel poster (lot 211) and a very
rare German sheet for Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer (lot 219) Among the programs
are such titles as Metropolis, King Kong, Mata Hari, Pandora's Box and many
others.
The sale concludes with a fine selection of TRAVEL & SPORTS
posters from the turn-of-the-century to the 1960s. Among the highlights are a
rare 1939 Automobile Exhibition poster (lot 296), several beautiful French rail
posters, two outstanding zeppelin travel posters from the 1930s (lots 330 and
331), the original 4-panel poster for the San Francisco Sutro Baths from 1896
(lot 335) and a small selection of maritime items.
