Winter Fine and Decorative Art
Cowan's will be offering more than 600 lots in its Winter Fine and Decorative Art Auction. Among the items offered is a small marble bust by renowned sculptor Edmonia Lewis (ca. 1842 - after 1909). The signed white marble bust of Minnehaha is one of five known signed and dated copies of Lewis's Minnehaha bust housed in public and private collections.
A fine selection of English sporting art will start off the sale, featuring works after known artists such as Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873), Thomas Henry Gibb (b. 1833), and Samuel Henry Alken (1810-1894). Other art will include early American portraiture including a portrait of woman and child with dog, Attributed to Sheldon Peck (1797-1868), estimated to bring $5,000-7,000 and a portrait of Elsie Roosevelt Ray attributed to Zedekiah Belknap (1781-1858), with an auction estimate of $4,000-6,000. A monumental oil on canvas by the 19th century African American painter, Robert Scott Duncanson (1821-1872) entitled "Robbing the Eagle's Nest" is estimated to bring $50,000-70,000.
Other highlights of the sale include a set of eight Hepplewhite mahogany shield-back side chairs (auction estimate $2,000-3,000), a diminutive Kentucky Sheraton clothes press (auction estimate $1,000-2,000), a signed H. L. Fry Cincinnati Art Carved table (auction estimate $2,000-3,000), and a New England, possibly New Hampshire Sheraton sofa in mahogany ($2,000-3,000). An impressive "Francis I" Reed & Barton sterling flatware service for twelve is estimated to bring $2,000-3,000 along with a six piece "Francis I" sterling tea service, estimated at $15,000-25,000.
The auction will feature items for the collections of William and Phyllis Gilmore of Lancaster, Ohio, Sara C. Kaufman of Lexington, Kentucky, Joan Erickson of Germantown, Ohio, Florian Dubrow of Cincinnati, Ohio and Property from the former First National Bank of Freemont, Indiana.
