Important Estate Auction of Ambassador Hohler
Harlowe-Powell Auction Ltd. is pleased to announce the Important Estate Auction Sale of the personal property of Ambassador Henry Arthur Frederick Hohler, C.M.G. and his wife Susan Hohler (nee Hood). Ambassador Hohler represented Great Britain in both Europe and Asia, including the Soviet Union and Viet Nam, and was invested as a Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.). His ancestral home is Long Crendon Manor, Buckinghamshire, England. In the early 1980s, Ambassador and Mrs. Hohler retired to Gloucester, Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay and brought with them from England many pieces of 17th, 18th, and 19th century furniture, silver, fine art and accessories.
Highlights of the auction sale include a late 17th c. oil on canvas by Michiel van Musscher, an extraordinary Georgian library table marquetried in ebony, bone and tortoiseshell, a 17th c. English oak draw leaf table (known to the family as the “Commonwealth table”, a William and Mary chest on frame, several 17th c. English oak chests of drawers, 17th c. English oak tavern tables, an English Regency Recamier, a pair of Georgian giltwood pier mirrors 100” high, a 17th c. English oak server, a trunk made for the 21st Empress of India’s Lancers and many other items of furniture.
In addition, there is a large quantity of early English sterling silver, many volumes from the Ambassador’s library, an impressive wardrobe of vintage clothing, autographed photos of the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret taken by Cecil Beaton, early engravings, fine china and a host of other interesting “smalls”.
